Nautical risks, quantified. Mitigations, proven.
Officers On Watch applies the IALA Risk Management Toolbox and IMO methodologies to assess, quantify and mitigate navigational risk in ports, waterways and offshore zones.
Certified IALA professionals, with real project results on three continents.
The methodologies we master
SIRA
Simplified IALA Risk Assessment: quantifies the risks identified during PAWSA with traffic data and expert judgement. We facilitated SIRA expert workshops in Cape Town for the South African authorities.
IWRAP
IALA Waterways Risk Assessment Programme: quantitative traffic modelling that calculates collision and grounding frequencies in ports, channels and traffic separation schemes.
PAWSA
Port and Waterway Safety Assessment: a structured, expert-led workshop that identifies risk factors and mitigation options in days rather than months. The ideal first scan.
Formal Safety Assessment:
The IMO's structured methodology for evaluating safety risks and comparing mitigation options, from hazard identification to cost-benefit analysis.
IMSAS
The IMO Member State Audit Scheme. We advise maritime administrations on audit readiness and on implementing IMO instruments consistently across their organisation.
Projects we have delivered
Nautical Risk Study, Princess Elisabeth Zone
Nautical risk study of Belgium's offshore wind zone for FPS Mobility and Transport, DG Shipping: analysing nautical safety around future wind farms, cable corridors and safety zones.
Extreme Weather Hazard Research, Belgian North Sea
IALA Risk Assessment Programme, South Africa
Commissioned by the South African authorities: a series of nautical risk studies using the IALA Risk Management Toolbox, covering ports including Richards Bay, the Mossel Bay TSS and FA Platform, and the Cape St Lucia Lighthouse. SIRA expert workshops facilitated in 8 ports around the country.
Joint 2025 research with the Antwerp Maritime Academy for the Federal Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment: extreme weather hazard identifiers for AI vessel tracking systems, keeping vessels at safe distances from critical offshore infrastructure during storms.
PAWSA for North Sea Ports
Port and Waterway Safety Assessments for ports on the North Sea: structured expert workshops that map risk factors and mitigation options with pilots, VTS operators and port authorities, as a first qualitative scan before quantitative modelling.
